Save a Purrfect Cat Day #1
Over the summer I have been volunteering at a non profit organization named Save A Purrfect Cat. They take in cats around Houston and adopt them out. What makes them different is their dedication to find a good home for the cat's. they like to have multiple meetings with potential adopters to make sure they can care for the animal. They also make sure that the animals will be comfortable for example, if a family does not have another animal they would like if the family could take two cat's. I volunteered Sunday the sixteenth. Most of the work I did was to make sure the cat's felt comfortable in the adoption house. The volunteer's do this for the goal of adopting the cats out faster. For instance, The more comfortable a cat feels the faster a family would potentially adopt them. A lot of the cats they adopt out are cats that are older or have a lot of health problems. For example one cat named Bogart was put in their care by a family who could no longer care for him. He has problems with his heart and vets told him that he did not have much time left, the organization was acting almost as a hospice to care for him until his passing. That was a very long time ago. Bogart is almost sixteen. He need to take multiple pills a day and is a lot of work. The organization would love for a family to adopt him but that might not happen. Bogart got me thinking of an issue for cat’s and most house animals around the world. That is when animals are abandoned by their families and left on the streets. Either because they can’t afford them or because they don't have the commitment. This is the circumstance of some of the animals at Save A Purrfect cat.
This website touches on some of the many problems of pet abandonment and how if everyone adopted animals instead of buying and breeding them than problems with overfilled shelters might not be as big. It briefly talks on how animal owners do not fix their pets and when or if they reproduce the animals are sometimes abandoned. A big problem in pounds worldwide is the issue that revolves around transporting animals to open spaces in animal shelters. This can take multiple volunteers sometimes due to the sheer amount of distance that needs to be covered for the animal to be transported. The website also covers statistics around abandonment. As many as 600 million animals are abandoned every year from around the world.
